Fresh Flower to Go

History is replete with products that were invented for one thing and became wildly successful for a different reason altogether. Coca-Cola® originally contained alcohol and coca leaves for treating morphine addiction under the name Pemberton’s French Wine Coca. Years later it became the beverage we know so well today. Bubblewrap was originally created as wallpaper. Velcro® was invented for NASA astronauts so objects literally would not float away in space. Today, we have MedTainer® which was invented to help pediatric and geriatric patients and is now flourishing for another kind of medicine.
The Past is Prologue
Many older adults and young children have difficulty swallowing pills. It’s not an uncommon situation and there are a variety of reasons for it, including a medical condition known as dysphasia. Grinding the pills into powder form is sometimes an option, and a Harvard University Health blog advises that “parents can grind pills into powder and add it to applesauce or pudding.” The MedTainer, FDA-approved and made from superior, medical-grade plastic provides the ability to grind pills on the go and store the powder in a safe container at the same time. Patients, parents, caregivers, and pet owners no longer need to carry around a separate grinder and storage container to take their medicine with them.
An Herbal Remedy
Over time, the people behind MedTainer realized there were other potential uses. This included use as a grinder/container for herbs, tea, coffee, and somewhat surprisingly, medical cannabis. For those patients who consume cannabis by smoking or vaping raw flower, the airtight, waterproof, and smell-proof MedTainer offers patients the flexibility to grind, go, and consume their medicine without attracting unwarranted attention. In a very real sense, it’s fresh flower when and where you need it.
A History of Success
In 2011, Shane Fairbrother met the MedTainer inventor who gave Shane product samples to try with friends. After getting positive feedback, Shane began visiting smoke shops to gauge interest in MedTainer and see what was already available in stores. At the time, metal grinders were the most prevalent, but Shane knew he had something special. Originally named The Daisy Cutter, that morphed into Grindtainer before the name MedTainer stuck for good. Shane started ramping up social media and in 2012, smoke shops began calling and placing orders.
Sales were now turning the endeavor into a growing company and Shane brought in his father Curt to help run the company. Having had a successful career in the car dealership business, Curt brought in his partner Doug to help grow and run the company. They built a handmade booth and attended their first trade show, the Kush show in Anaheim, California. They hauled 10,000 containers to the show and ended up selling nearly 6,000 MedTainers. Buoyed by that initial success, they got on the tradeshow circuit, made contacts, and orders started pouring in, especially from Canada.
An 18-Wheeler in the Driveway
From 2012 through 2014 the company operated out of Curt’s home. In true startup mode, pallets filled with inventory took over the garage while Shane, Curt, and Doug sorted orders in the living room. Probably to the chagrin of Curt’s neighbors, it became commonplace for 18-wheel tractor-trailers to pull up in front of the house where Shane, Curt, and Doug loaded the pallets for shipping. Over the next few years, growth remained steady and in 2014, the company went public. A year later, the company closed the garage door for good and moved to the current offices in Corona, California. The company added to its executive ranks and created a dedicated sales team as well.
The Daily Grind
Like most startups seeking to expand, the company is exploring additional investment opportunities to improve manufacturing efficiencies, increase inventory and product lines, and expand revenues. To date, the products are in 48 countries and have 2,800 customers. This means that people the world over can now easily grind, store, and discretely carry their flower in one ingenious MedTainer product. Ask for one at your local cannabis dispensary or visit the MedTainer website to learn more.
